30 minute documentary short produced, directed, and edited by Leah Holmes, Vanessa Kjeldsen, and Kelsey Carroll
Synopsis:
Evanston, IL is known for being one of the most progressive, diverse, and socially liberal cities in America. Yet, it is also one of the most divided. The film explores how Evanston's racially segregated past is closely tied with the popular American youth organization known as the YMCA. Evanston used to have two YMCAs. In the early 1900s, the McGaw YMCA (the historical White YMCA), did not want Black people occupying the space, so they opened a branch for Black residents: The Emerson YMCA. Emerson YMCA became a cultural hub for the Black community in Evanston; For many, it became a second home. However, when the National YMCA announced plans to desegregate all of its facilities, Emerson YMCA was sold and the building fell into disrepair. Eventually, the McGaw YMCA gave it to the Evanston Fire Department, who used it to practice putting out fires, and, in 1980, demolished the building. Now, more than 40 years later, original YMCA members reminisce on the memories, and the heartache brought on by the demolition of the building. Current-day Evanston is a product of gentrification efforts made in the name of progress. But this has led to the closure of many institutions, like the Emerson Y, in the fifth-ward (Evanston's historically Black community). Fifth-ward residents, Emerson Y members, and Mayor Biss all comment on Evanston's social and economic issues, and the direction the city is heading.
